LIGHT

A beam of light cutting the skin of space

travels at the speed of time to the beginning,

the end of things, seeing everything between,

without being seen.

Or a single photon released into a sphere

lined with silver, instantaneously covering

all of space, repeating that cold cycle endlessly,

as if someone might see.

It is a discrete miracle, like a man’s soul,

a point on a continuum proliferating one day

to saturate the universe with something better

than gas, heat, matter.

It is moonlight, the boxes sketched on the floor

at two thirty three in the morning, a lighter

shade of light. Watch it turn the earth.

It is promiscuous,

infecting its neighbors, or looking to.

It stretches across the sky like an eyelid

and proliferates color like a drug dream.

It splits the prism

into living spectra, dulls the magnifying glass,

blanches the dead leaf, burns the cloud white;

it is nothing at all—until it strikes something.

Blue Note, Sonnet #619

I took a photo seven times —

A thick grove of dark spindly trees

Backed by a bright December sun —

And a small turquoise dot shines

In each — the camera lens sees

Images where I think are none.

I continued my walk by a pond,

Looking for mink and waterfowl.

Hawks circled each other beyond,

Their screeches in the wind a howl.

From deep hoof prints I knew a deer

Had trod this path, now nowhere near.

I stared at the sun — a blinked tear

Painted the trees with a blue smear.

Light Verse

A man stepped onto a star,

Asked, “Can I have a blink?”

“You’ve had too much to think,”

Said the star, “Go to Mars.”

But the planet, dull and red

Had burnt out, gone to bed.

“All I want is a wink of light,”

Said the man to the sun,

Who replied, “Oh, thou person,

I don’t think you’re very bright.”

[Don’t look to me for a moral —

My insight’s fading, auroral.]

Echo

To the echo the mirror said,

“You repeat until you are dead,

While I’m an eternal ‘instead,’

Light’s reversal that cannot fade.”

The echo replied, “fade, fai, daid.”

Night fell — only light was afraid.

Dust In Light, Sonnet #484

My book of the first 200 of these sonnets is now available for purchase. Click here:
My Human Disguise.

Have you ever watched motes
Closely, drifting in sun-
Or lamplight, tiny boats,
Rudderlessly, as one,
Ever shunning the dim,
Floating within the shaft,
Bouncing back from its rim
Until caught in a draft?
In quiet air the dust
Moves slowly, rises, turns
In a secret pattern
Closer to will than must.
